Oh isn't it ironic considering how often I use the phrase "Fail to prepare, prepare to fail", yet when I went to Brno in the Czech Republic this summer to see one of Mies van der Rohe's masterpieces, the Villa Tugendhat, I did exactly that: One big huge GIANT FAIL!!
To visit the villa you have to book a guided tour several weeks in advance, the website suggests two months in advance but cancellation tickets are available at shorter notice if you're lucky. I wasn't. Usually you can at least go into the gardens and press your nose against the windows but with my luck, there had to be a wedding that morning so the garden was closed too. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to come back, properly prepared, with pre-booked tickets!!
Thankfully Villla Tugendhat wasn't the only reason I went to Brno for, it was also the starting and end point of a 6 day road trip around eastern Czech Republic, southern Poland and bits of Slovakia (including the Tatra Mountains) so it wasn't a complete disaster but it will hopefully have taught me a lesson.
