Who knew that up until 1948 there were Olympic Medals for art, architecture, town planning, literature, music and sculpture. I certainly didn't (well, I do now) when I saw this list of the Gold Medal winners of the 1936 Olympis on a wall of the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. 
They even had a Gold Medal for alpinism, whatever that may be.
